Just for fun: White's Ledge, Mt. Stanton, Mt. Pickering, Mt. Langdon

I have been skiing at Attitash, on and off, for about 20 years now. I have always loved looking, from the summit, at the ridgeline across the valley - specifically the granite cliffs on the far-right. Here is a picture I took Monday Feb. 4, 2013, when I went skiing with Deede:

Going from right-to-left, you see the granite ledge (White's Ledge), Mt. Stanton, Mt. Pickering and Mt. Langdon.

Mt. Stanton is 1716 feet, Mt. Pickering is 1930 feet, and Mt. Langdon is 2390 feet - all not very high, but I started at 650 feet (and ended at 740 feet)

Using Map My Walk, I went up Mt Stanton Trail Trail (1.4 miles) to Mt Stanton (stopping at White's Ledge), then 0.7 miles to Mt Pickering, then 2.4 miles to Mt Langdon, then 0.8 miles to Mt Langdon Shelter, the 0.4 to the Mt Langdon Trail. From there it was 2.5 miles down to where Wendy was picking me up in Bartlett. With twists and turns and overlooks, I covered 9.5 miles in 4 hours. I covered about 4,690 feet in climbing elevation (2390 ups, and 2300 downs) - it was a good workout:

The view from White's Ledge, showing the valley and Attitash (Bear Peak in the distance)

My selfies on top of Mount Stanton

and Mount Pickering

another pretty view of Attitash

and a beautiful view out the north side of the ridge, looking north up the Rocky Branch/Jericho Road valley

my selfie on Mt Langdon

the Mt Langdon Shelter (the trail gets a little confusing around here)

the sun started coming out on my way back down

it was nice seeing the car when I hit the end at 1:27 (I had told Wendy 1:30, so my timing was PRETTY GOOD!!!)

Thank you God for a Great Day!

North Conway/Bartlett trailhead
9.5 miles -- hiking (4 hours)
3 hours -- to get home

We listened to the radio, Wendy read me sections of "The Boys In The Boat" (University of Washington rowing in the 1930's), and we listened to Ben Howard's "Every Kingdom".

My 20th (North Twin) and 21st (South Twin) 4,000 footers!

The end-of-July hike (Mount Willey, Mount Field, and Mount Tom) are grouped together in Crawford Notch State Park in the "middle group" (in the far-right green circle).
Previous hikes have been:
North Kinsman and South Kinsman are the far-far-left green circle
Cannon Mountain is the far-left green circle
just east of Cannon are Mount Lincoln and Mount Lafayette
south of them are Mount Flume and Mount Liberty (in the lower green circle)
Mount Hale is the middle-upper green circle
while today's hike (North Twin and South Twin) are in the red square:

Go up 93 from Boston, around on Route 3 for about 8 miles, then right (south) up Haystack Road for 2.5 miles

Using Map My Walk, I went up North Twin Trail (4.3 miles) to North Twin, then on North Twin Spur to get to the South Twin summit (1.3 miles), then backtracked to North Twin and down to the parking area (5.6 miles). With twists and turns and overlooks, I covered 11.8 miles in 5 hours 16 minutes. I covered about 6,740 feet in climbing elevation (2800 up, 230 down, 340 up, 340 down, 230 up, and then finally 2800 down):

North Twin Trail goes basically straight-and-flat up along Little River for 2 miles, and is GORGEOUS! It crosses Little River 3 times, and each time you have to play hopscotch - this is the view down from the trail:

This is the view upstream at my first river crossing

and the view upstream at my third river crossing

In the spring, this river must be insane - all those boulders are scoured CLEAN - also note the tree roots coming out of the bank!

After crossing the river for the last time, you go up a "regular hiking trail" - not too hard, but steeper-than-easy. After about another mile the trail gets steep

and stays that way all the way to the top

There is a nice outlook before the top, and then you are back in "high alpine forest" (very thick with moss) - a lot like a "ridge walk"

the view east - that peak in front of me might be Mount Hale

My selfie on North Twin

There is a cairn on the outlook just west of the North Twin summit

and the view west includes Galehead Mountain, with Mount Garfield in the far right and the Franconia Ridge in the distance (Lafayette, Lincoln, Liberty and Flume [right-to-left]). Owl's Head Mountain is the mountain beyond Galehead and in front of Flume

My picture on South Twin

taken by a friend hiking the AT (that's hiker-lingo for "Appalachian Trail"):

That is North Twin in the distance, which I have to get back to:

another beautiful view on my way back down

and an abundance of color on the trail near the end of the hike

and that's all for today! I can't wait to get Wendy up here to see Little River! Thank you God for a Great Day!

My 18th (North Kinsman) and 19th (South Kinsman) 4,000 footers!

The end-of-July hike (Mount Willey, Mount Field, and Mount Tom) are grouped together in Crawford Notch State Park in the "middle group" (in the far-right green circle).

south of them are Mount Flume and Mount Liberty (in the lower green circle)
Mount Hale is the middle-upper green circle
while today's hike (North Kinsman and South Kinsman) are in the red square:

Using Map My Walk, I went up Lonesome Lake Trail (1.4 miles), around the southeast side of Lonesome Lake (0.3 miles), then up Fishin' Jimmy Trail to Kinsman Junction (2.1 miles), then along the Kinsman Ridge Trail, stopping at the overlook on North Kinsman (0.6 miles), then over to South Kinsman summit (1.0 miles). I backtracked (1.5 miles) through North Knisman and took a right down the Kinsman Pond Trail (around beautiful Kinsman Pond!) (2.6 miles). When it intersected, I took a left up Cascade Brook Trail up to Lonesome Lake (0.9 miles), then returned down Lonesome Lake Trail to the parking area (1.5 miles). I covered 11.9 miles in 5 hours 15 minutes. I covered about 6,150 feet in climbing elevation (2420 up, 150 down, 250 up, 1920 down, 410 up, and then finally 1000 down):

Lonesome Lake Trail is a good trail, for hikers of just about all abilities:

Lonesome Lake is as beautiful as ever:

and it empties into the woods at the southern end

Fishin' Jimmy Trail gets a little crazy - that's the Trail going up on the left, and that's a mossy waterfall on the right

a nice view from a clearing

The Kinsman Ridge Trail

My selfie on North Kinsman

and the view across Franconia Notch at Mounts Lafayette, Lincoln, Liberty and Flume!!!

the view north towards Cannon Mountain

My selfie on South Kinsman (finally a cairn!!)

back down to Kinsman Pond Trail:

and Kinsman Pond (wow de wow de wow!!):

the trail literally goes down a brook:

another blog (SectionHiker) supports my impression of a wet tricky trail (but FUN)

the stream

and waterfall!!

the trail back up to Lonesome Lake (the top part of Cascade Brook Trail) is nice:

and that's all for today! WOW, what a HIKE - Thank you God for a GREAT DAY!
